CURRENCY
The official currency of Seoul is the South Korean won (KRW), also known as the Korean Republic won. One won is divided into 100 jeon, though the jeon is no longer used in everyday transactions and appears only in foreign exchange rates.
Banknotes are issued in denominations of ₩1,000, ₩5,000, ₩10,000, and ₩50,000. Coins come in ₩10, ₩50, ₩100, and ₩500.
Bringing a combination of cash and a credit or debit card to Seoul provides the most security and flexibility. Money can be exchanged at the airport, local banks, money changers, and some hotels. ATMs are also widely available throughout the city.
CLIMATE
September marks the transition from summer to autumn in Seoul, offering pleasant and comfortable weather for visitors. Temperatures typically range from highs of around 26°C to lows of about 15°C. Humidity levels drop compared to the summer months, and the city experiences mild breezes and generally clear skies — making it an ideal time for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
SHOPPING
Seoul offers a vibrant shopping scene with something for every taste. Popular areas include Myeong-dong for fashion and skincare, Cheongdam-dong for luxury brands, and the lively Hongdae area for trendy boutiques and local designs. Traditional markets such as Dongdaemun and Namdaemun are also must-visits for souvenirs, street food, and unique local finds.
TIPPING
Tipping is not customary in Seoul. Service charges are typically included in bills at restaurants, hotels, and taxis, and additional tips are neither expected nor required. However, in some high-end hotels or international establishments, small gratuities may be appreciated but are entirely optional.
POWER PLUGS
In South Korea, power plugs and sockets of type C and type F are used. The standard voltage is 220 V at a frequency of 60 Hz. Visitors from countries using different plug types or voltages should bring an appropriate travel adapter or converter.
GETTING AROUND
Seoul has an extensive subway and bus system, which are both efficient, affordable and cover most of the city. Purchase a T-money card from a convenience store or subway station, which is a rechargeable card that can be used on buses and subways. Taxis are also affordable and easy to hail on the street. Ride share apps like Kakao T and Uber are good options too.
